Laia de Nadal (Barcelona, 1972) has been rector of UPF since March 2023.
She graduated in Veterinary Medicine from the Autonomous University of Barcelona in 1995 and did her doctorate in the same discipline, specializing in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, in 2000. She has done postdoctoral research stays as a Ramón y Cajal researcher at UPF and at the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule (ETH) in Zurich.
She has been a full professor at the UPF Department of Medicine and Life Sciences (MELIS) since 2017, where she has taught on the bachelor’s degrees in Human Biology and Medicine and in Biomedical Engineering, and where she has also supervised some fifteen doctoral theses.
Regarding her research, she has co-directed the Cell Signaling Research Group, affiliated to the Institute for Research in Biomedicine, Barcelona, which studies how cells respond and adapt to changes in their environment. She also sits on several scientific boards and has twice been awarded the ICREA Acadèmia, in the 2012 and 2020 editions.
In the field of management, she has been vice-rector for Knowledge Transfer (2021-2023), deputy director of Research and Transfer at the Department (2015-2019), a member of the University’s Culture Committee (2018-2021), of the Faculty Board (2021-2023), and of the Teaching Committee (2011-2015).
