Description

While most know of Steve Astephen for the trailblazing mark he has made in
Action Sports by creating the first-ever snowboard shop and becoming the first
agent to start representing action sports athletes, few knew his humble
beginnings. Astephen began his career in 1988 on a greyhound bus from Boston,
Massachusetts with the opportunity of becoming a professional skier landing him
in Vail, Colorado. After a career ending injury he began developing his professional
career with Vail Associates as the Manager of On-Mountain Retail. Through his
experience, he identified a white space in the market and recognized the
opportunity with the snowboard and skateboarding industry. Shortly after he
opened, ‘The Otherside’ becoming the first snowboard shop that not only proved
to be fiscally successful but garnered loyalty and life long relationships within the
snowboard community.
In 1994, Astephen moved to San Diego, becoming the Team Manager of Lamar
Snowboards. Continuing on with his desire to break the mold, Astephen forged the
first licensing deal for a snowboarding video game with Nintendo. While at Lamar
Astephen dominated the industry by signing one of the most powerful teams in
snowboarding with the likeness of Kevin Jones, Jussi Oksanan, Megan Pishke and
more.
Recognizing a need for the market, Astephen left the brand and retail industry to
found the first action sports agency, fittingly named, ‘The Familie.’ His success
quickly grew to a roster of over 30 of the worldʼs top action sports athletes,
spanning across- BMX, motocross, snowboarding, skateboarding, surfing, and
wake-boarding. By 1999, The Familie was established as the premier action sports
marketing and athlete management agency with services that included marketing,
public relations, creative, licensing, trend research, event activation and
consulting.
In April 2003, Astephen partnered with Wasserman Media Group where he served
as the Managing Partner for 16 years. Astephen was instrumental to the growth
Wasserman experienced as they became the largest athletes representation
agency, growing to over 1600 athletes and representing countless Fortune 500
brands. Continuing to not only grow the strength and presence of action sports,
but he also took his same ingenuity to the expansion of building brands with
athletes in NBA and developing the golf market. During his time Astephen was
selected by Sports Business Journal as one of its coveted “Forty Under 40” in
sports.
Through his experience as an agent matched with his knowledge of what brands
need and the foresight of the market, Astephen identified a lack of efficiencies and
authenticity with the agencies in sport. With his entrepreneurial spirit, he created a
solution by forming a full-service boutique agency within Wasserman,
concentrating on all things sports. He called it “The Agency”. Within the first 2
years, The Agency worked with RBC Bank, Farmers, Cobra Golf, Audemars Piguet,
Art of Sport and others, all helping them create authentic storytelling in sports.
During his time with the agency Astephen, directed several commercials with
athletes such as Klay Thompson, Ricky Fowler, Dustin Johnson, Alex Morgan, and
others.
Astephen, left Wasserman mid-2019 to continue on with that entrepreneurial spirit
reviving and launching his own agency, The Familie V.2 a representation and brand
building agency working across sports, music, art, and media.
Astephen remains an active investor and advisor today for brands such as
Hoonigan Media Machine, Stance socks, Kopari, Art of Sport and Nixon. He
currently resides in Cardiff, CA.
