Following our recent participation at BB Talks, a convention that is part of the leading European construction trade show, Barcelona Building Construmat, we wanted to catch up with one of the startups that exhibited with us at last year’s edition as we’d heard through the grapevine that they’ve really been going places since their participation in 2017 and so we obviously wanted to find out more! Meet the architects of lighting design – ProtoPixel….
Tell us a bit about your startup
At ProtoPixel we are changing the way to create expressive smart lighting in the retail, hospitality and entertainment markets.
Our Lighting as a Service platform allows businesses to create and control unique lighting experiences directly from the cloud, without the need for significant budgets or expert professionals. We aim at democratising lighting design by offering a software and hardware solution that’s easy to use, install and manage.
You exhibited as part of the 4YFN delegation at Barcelona Building Construmat last year, how was your overall exhibitor experience?
It was absolutely great! It was the first time we exhibited at BB Construmat. Being under the 4YFN umbrella helped us increase our visibility to the press and to the visitors in general (the pavilion looked really attractive and drove many visitors to our stand).
Did BB Construmat have the right target audience for your company? If so, who was there?
The target audience was an excellent fit for ProtoPixel. Our clients are professionals, which include a wide range of profiles such as contractors, light manufacturers, architects, designers and creative agencies. Most of them were visiting BBConstrumat so we had the chance to expand our professional network and meet potential customers and collaborators.
Did you make some worthwhile connections with those that you met?
We did! We opened conversations with manufacturers to integrate our solution into their fixtures. These type of partnerships are very difficult to start if you don’t meet the right people in the company, and at BBConstrumat, most of the company representatives were exactly our main target and focus.
Do you have any success stories that you wish to share with us that has happened to your startup since the event?
The last 12 months really made the difference for our company: we are the technology behind the very first smart stage at a festival (Primavera Sound), we are in several stores (Desigual, Casas) and we are also happy to announce that by the end of May the iconic Torre Glóries in the @22 District will be running with the latest ProtoPixel technology, allowing it to be interactive and more dynamic!
Most recently we’ve been awarded with the Neotec public fund and we are among 9 amazing companies selected for the 2018 batch at the Metro Accelerator powered by Techstars in Berlin.
Do you think that your presence during BB Construmat had an impact on your recent success with winning the Neotech public fund and gaining access to the metro accelerator programme powered by Techstars?
Participating at BBConstrumat contributed to improve our positioning in the construction market. We learned so much during those few days and we applied that knowledge to our business strategy. So definitely, what we are today is down to taking part and experiencing events such as BBConstrumat.
So what are your goals for 2018/19? Do you plan to attend next year?
Our goal for the next 12 months is to positionate our technology in the lighting market. Today, we are quite established in Spain (+100 deployments in the last year), now it’s time to expand our market to the rest of Europe! With our office in Berlin, and the participation at Metro Accelerator, Germany is right now our natural priority.
And yes, we definitely want to attend BBConstrumat next year!
